Everyone thinks punk, rap, and Eurodance grew up in separate rooms -- they didn't. In 1987, Ramones bassist Dee Dee Ramone rebranded as Dee Dee King and put out a straight-up rap record, years before that kind of crossover was normal. Then Tone Loc's Wild Thing, one of rap's first true pop crossover smashes, turns out to be riding a sampled Van Halen guitar riff the whole time. Jump to 1997 Germany, and Da Party Boom is filling Eurodance clubs on the back of Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick's untouchable 1985 hip-hop record. Same DNA, three different decades, three different genres wearing it like a disguise.
