We think of music videos as an MTV invention, born in 1981 with a moon-man logo and a Buggles song. But rewind further and the format was already alive and well. Cat Stevens commissioned an animated film for Moonshadow back in 1972, nearly a decade before MTV signed on air. ABBA built one of Europe's first purpose-made pop promos for SOS in 1975. And Queen was already directing cinematic visual storytelling for We Are the Champions in 1977, four years before the channel that supposedly started it all. MTV didn't create the music video. It just gave it a home.
