Napalm Death invented grindcore on Earache. Morbid Angel brought death metal to the world. Carcass, Godflesh, Entombed, Cathedral, Bolt Thrower, Sleep — every one of them a genre-defining force, every one of them finding their home at a label run by one obsessive person who understood the music on its own terms. Earache proved that the most extreme music on earth didn't need a major label, a big city, or a mainstream audience. It just needed someone who believed in it. The records hold up.
